Abc 730 Political Journalist Laura Tingle Calls For A Review Of Public Service Culture

ABC 7.30 political journalist Laura Tingle calls for a review of public service culture

ABC journalist Laura Tingle states that when the Robodebt Royal Commission ends, Australians need to consider public service culture.

The ABC's Laura Tingle said on Twitter that there will be some serious talking required about public service culture once the Robodebt royal commission ends.

The Australian government's Robodebt scheme used automated data-matching to identify people who may have been overpaid welfare payments.

The scheme was found to have wrongly accused thousands of people of owing money to the government, and has been linked to suicides.

Tingle said that the public service has a "culture of mistrust" and a "lack of accountability".

"We need to have a serious talk about public service culture," she said.

"We need to ask ourselves what kind of public service we want, and what values we want it to uphold."

Tingle's comments come as the Robodebt royal commission is due to hand down its final report later this year.

The commission is expected to make recommendations on how to prevent a similar scheme from being implemented in the future.
