California Bill Would Offer Home Loans to Undocumented Immigrants
New legislation faces criticism from Republicans
A bill making its way through the California legislature would provide home loans to undocumented immigrants, a move that has drawn criticism from Republicans.
The bill, AB 481, would allow undocumented immigrants who meet certain criteria to apply for low-interest loans from the state's California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA).
Key Provisions of the Bill
- Undocumented immigrants who have lived in California for at least three years would be eligible to apply.
- Applicants must have a valid taxpayer identification number (ITIN) and meet income and credit requirements.
- The loans would be funded through a $500 million bond measure that would need to be approved by voters.
Opposition from Republicans
Republicans have been quick to criticize the bill, arguing that it would reward illegal immigration and divert resources away from other priorities.
"This bill is a slap in the face to every legal immigrant who has followed the rules and waited their turn," said Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-Granite Bay).
Support from Democrats
Democrats, on the other hand, have praised the bill as a way to help undocumented immigrants achieve the dream of homeownership.
"Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to live, regardless of their immigration status," said Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles).
Uncertain Future
The fate of the bill is uncertain. It has passed the Assembly and is now being considered by the Senate. Governor Gavin Newsom has not yet taken a position on the bill.
