Convicted of killing six women with ties to the city's drug-dealing community, he's believed to have killed more

He died Wednesday at a hospital where he’d been sent for heart surgery, Canada’s public broadcaster said.

Robert William _Willy_ Pickton, a Canadian serial killer convicted of murdering six women with ties to Vancouver’s drug-dealing community, has died at age 74.

Pickton died Wednesday at a hospital where he’d been transferred for heart surgery, Canada’s public broadcaster CBC reported. The cause of death was not immediately released, but the British Columbia Coroners Service will investigate.

Pickton owned and operated a pig farm in Port Coquitlam, a suburb of Vancouver, and many of the remains of his victims were found on the property. He was arrested in February 2002, and in December 2007, was found guilty of six counts of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Investigators believe Pickton may have killed more than 40 women, but he was only charged with the six murders for which there was sufficient evidence.
